Year 5
Before you start
Below is a teacher’s handbook, student activity book, 8 weekly powerpoints (2 lessons each), and a simple emotional vocabulary test to measure the effectiveness of the lessons.
These resources are designed for Year 5 and could also be used for Year 6, or even Year 7 classes, with suitable adjustments.
Before looking at the materials, if you have not already done so, please read this blog post and listen to the 20 minute podcast included there about the Developing Emotions programme.
Handbooks, PowerPoints, and supporting resources
Your guide to the 8 week programme, including lesson plans and recommended further reading is the Developing Emotions Teacher’s Handbook [PDF].
We recommend that, if you are able, you print out a copy of the Student’s Activity Book [PDF] for each child taking these lessons.
The activity book is 60 pages long and includes colour printing. If that presents a major logistical barrier to your school using these lessons, then please email us to discuss potential alternative printing arrangements.
To measure the effectiveness of these lessons, children should complete this simple emotional vocabulary quiz before and after the 8 week programme. You can then measure the percentage increase in the average number of successful emotional synonyms identified by each child.
In the final week, or after the end of the programme, children might also enjoy playing one or both of our history of emotions based games.
In the table below are the links to download all 8 weekly PowerPoints (including embedded media clips, images, and activities for all lessons). Note that these are large files (because of the embedded media) and will take some time to download.
